Shockwave Therapy

WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a new clinically proven physiotherapy treatment modality where high energy sound waves stimulate metabolic reactions when applied to injured tissue. It causes controlled micro-trauma at the lesion site which results in mild inflammation and increases circulation. This kick starts the body’s natural healing process by triggering stem cell activation. Inefficient scar tissue is broken down and pain felt by nerve fibers is reduced.

The damaged tissue then regenerates resulting in healing of the injury. With this innovative therapy approach, pathological alterations of tendons, ligaments, capsules, muscles and bones can be eliminated systematically.

SHOCKWAVE AND PHYSIOTHERAPY

It is important to note that to fully rehabilitate an injuried muscle or tendon, additional rehabilitation including strengthening of the specific and associated structures, is required. Shockwave Therapy is merely an additional “tool” to speed up the healing process.

Thus, based on a comprehensive evaluation of your injury, we will determine the treatment plan specific to your injury. This may include a combination of manual therapy (hand’s on), rehab exercises and shockwave therapy. The number of sessions is patient specific.
